Lance Armstrong in South Africa

Lance Armstrong was in South Africa yesterday, the 18 Jan. 2006, for the launch of the Adcock-Ingram’s Unite 4 Health campaign. One of the aims of the campaign is make people aware of the need to take care of their health, and to provide the facilities to do this.I wrote off the idea of attending the event when I discovered the price of tickets. They ranged from about R1000 to R3500 per seat. Knowing that Lance is one of my idols, my wife surprised me with two tickets to last nights function. Needless to say, I was over the moon. All dressed up, we arrived at the Sandton Convention center at about 19:25, just in time for the evenings events which was hosted by Jerry Rantseli. After a great salmon starter, we were given a presentation by Tiger brands, the holding company of Adcock-Ingram. The presentation detailed the Unit 4 Health campaign and why Lance Armstrong was selected to be the guest of honour. An auction was held to raise further funds for the campaign. There were 5 items that guests could bid on namely A group photo with Lance, a Trek carbon bike, a signed yellow Discovery jersey, a signed Tiger Woods photo and a signed Muhammad Ali photo. The auction raised about another million Rand, for example the group photo with Lance fetched R225 000. Yip, that’s almost a quarter of a million Rand for a photo.Lance took the stage after our tasty beef main course. He spoke for about 30 minutes on his battle with cancer and how he went on to win the tour 7 times. He took a couple of questions from the audience and also handed out the items that were bought on auction. The evening was a chance of a life time and I loved every minute of it. You cant help but be inspired!
