Pick n Pay enters Music Download Market

Pick ‘n Pay are currently beta testing a new music download service called Pick ‘n Play. The Microsoft IE only offers a selection of tracks for R8.99 each as well as mobile games, ring tones, wallpapers etc.I’ve been invited to be a beta tester, otherwise referred to as a crash test dummy on the site. As a tester, I’ve been allocated R15 to purchase and download tracks. All music sold on the site has DRM and requires Windows Media player to be installed on the client machine. Tracks can be moved to portable players and are allowed to be burned to CD up to 5 times. With the absence of iTunes in South Africa, there is a huge market for cheap music downloads. If Pick ‘n Pay are going to satisfy this market remains to be seen. I remain skeptical.

R8.99 per track is certainly not cheap!
That’ll work out to R130 for a normal album. hardly cheap!
