Near Misses

This weekend’s Super 14 final, which saw the Sharks beaten in the final minutes by the Bulls, made me think what it must be like for the players of the losing side. How many opportunities like that does the average player get? Is there any likelihood of any of them getting another go at a Super 14 final?

What must it be like to lose the World Cup Soccer final, lose in the finals at Wimbledon, get beaten in the Olympic 100m final etc. To experience such a high and then the lowest of lows must remain with the individuals for the rest of their lives.

Does this only apply to sports or can it be related to normal life? Have you ever interviewed for a dream job that you never got or had a project that you’ve been working on for months cancelled? Does the average person experience anything that comes close to this?

Personally, I don’t think I’ve been exposed to such extreme emotions. I can only imagine that it must be similar to the death of a family member or a close friend.
